CLUB GASCON – Classic & Authentic French Cookery

This Michelin starred French restaurant has been nestled close to Smithfield Market for over 20 years, and remains one of the best places to enjoy authentic French cookery. Club Gascon has a reputation for producing some of the best duck dishes the capital has to offer, so it’s worth trying these if you have made a booking.

If duck is not to your taste, then the menu offers a variety of other meat and fish dishes. Starters include Lobster cappuccino, black pudding & crunchy asparagus (£29.50) and Citrus lake district lamb, black salsify, ceps mushroom & capers (£38.50) for main.

At Club Gascon you will usually find a soufflé on the menu, these can be savoury or sweet. On our last visit we were treated to a subtle peach soufflé which was a technical delight and a calm note to end the meal on.

The dining room is quite intimate and has an atmosphere you would expect at a long standing white cloth venue. Upon entry we were greeted by the welcoming staff and throughout the service they were attentive and polite. It felt as though the staff were handpicked from the South of France to add to the experience.

The restaurant is vegetarian friendly and has a 5 Course Veg Tasting Menu at £70pp. This includes dishes such as the Crackling slow cooked truffled duck egg in the nest. The carnivorous version of the tasting menu comes in at £85pp plus £45 for the wine paring if required.

Club Gascon has had a Michelin Star since 2002 and there is a definite classical sense to the food being produced at the restaurant. At over £100 per head for the A La Carte menu the cooking could be a bit more innovative, but if you want a solid French affair then Club Gascon will deliver.
